A Smart Upgrade from a 50-Year-Old Furnace

Hello! I’m really pleased with my purchase of the Desert Shield S-Series heat pump. Replacing my 50-year-old Wesco resistive electric furnace with this unit has already started saving us money. Living in Vancouver, WA, where electricity rates are currently 0.0816 cents per kWh (and expected to rise to 0.87 cents in March 2024), the change is significant. The setup includes a 2-ton outdoor S-Series cold climate heat pump paired with a 3-ton air handler inside. On cold mornings, the unit initially uses around 1,700 watts at 60 decibels, gradually ramping down to 240 watts at 48 decibels as it settles in. The air temperature at the duct ranges from 102 degrees at its peak to as low as 74 degrees. The air handler does run more frequently than our old furnace, but the overall energy consumption is much lower. For comparison, our old furnace was a power-hungry, 18,000-watt all-electric unit drawing 74 amps on each 120-volt leg of the 240-volt circuit. In contrast, the Desert Shield heat pump only pulls about 9 amps on each 120-volt leg at maximum usage. That’s a significant reduction in energy use.

One thing to note is that the heat pump does operate at varying levels throughout the day, which I believe helps maintain a consistent 71 degrees on our thermostat. Over the first 15 days of use, I estimate our heating costs will be around $6.00 to $7.00 a month, compared to the $75 we used to spend during the same period with our old furnace— and that was with the thermostat set down to 65 degrees and using a space heater in one room. Overall, I’m thrilled with the savings and performance of our new Desert Shield system.

Unbelievably Quiet and Efficient

I’m amazed by how unbelievably quiet the Desert Shield DSSZS6 is! The outside unit is so silent that you can’t even hear it turn on, which is fantastic since it’s located next to the pool—something my old unit struggled with due to excessive noise. The size is impressive, being three times smaller than my previous 5-ton unit. The inside unit is equally quiet; I can’t hear it at all when it operates. Even on the second day after installation, when temperatures dropped to 16°F, it performed flawlessly. I highly recommend this system—definitely deserving of 5 stars!

So Far, So Good with Desert Shield HVAC!

It’s been just a few weeks since we installed our new Desert Shield HVAC system, and everything is going smoothly. The WiFi thermostat is a fantastic feature, adding convenience and control. I’m excited to see how much our energy bill decreases as we move into the warmer seasons. So far, so good.

Quiet Performance and Effective Heating

Although it’s a brand-new purchase and I can’t provide extensive feedback yet, the Desert Shield system is impressively quiet and heats effectively even in cold temperatures. There was a bit of a challenge with the thermostat initially, but it seems to be working well now. So far, we’ve only used it in heating mode, and it’s performing as expected.

A Promising Upgrade

Although our Amana heat pump has only been installed for about a week, it’s already proving to be a great choice. We had to replace our 6-year-old American Standard due to a freon leak, and our installer, One Hour Heating and Cooling, was highly efficient in both removing the old unit and installing the new one.

The only slight downside is that we hear the fan a bit more than with the previous unit. However, we’ve adjusted the thermostat to 4 degrees lower than before, which may contribute to this. Despite the minor fan noise, the heat pump operates very quietly otherwise—the compressor is completely inaudible.

On the day of installation, with temperatures barely reaching 42 degrees, the system quickly brought our home up to the desired temperature in just a few hours. So far, I’m very satisfied and would recommend it. I look forward to providing another review in 6 or 7 years!

Impressed with Our New Heat Pump Systems

We decided to replace our 2008 heat pump pre-emptively, even though it was still functioning, due to concerns about its efficiency and potential for unexpected failure. Our one-story house with a bonus room over the garage previously relied on a single system. Now, we’ve replaced the old unit and added a new system for the bonus room. We’re extremely impressed with the quiet operation of the new systems and are optimistic about seeing reduced energy bills. The new systems boast an impressive 17.2 SEER rating.

New Desert Shield Heat Pump and Furnace: Excellent Choice for Efficiency

After extensive research, I chose the Desert Shield SEER 17 Cold Climate Heat Pump and a 97% efficient furnace for those very cold days. Although it was installed in late May, I’ve already seen the heat pump in action. It keeps my home as cool as our previous air conditioner but uses about half the electricity. I anticipate even more savings as time goes on.
